Rust Prevention for Wrought Iron Gates

06/24/2014 Back To Blog

There are many different reasons why wrought iron gates are often chosen as the best material for solid sliding gates. One reason is because of how long lasting the material is. Iron is one of the best materials to use as far as longevity is concerned, and so long as one understands how maintenance service for this type of material works there should be absolutely no trouble. However, there are times when this particular type of material can be more trouble than it’s worth – and that is with the rust.

It doesn’t matter how fancy sliding gate rollers are if you can’t even properly move it due to the collection of rust. Because it is constantly exposed to the elements, the iron will eventually start to get rusty – but there are ways in which one can prevent rust from occurring in the first place. Specialists over at gate repair Westlake Village recommends attempting this risk reducing method to ensure that rust never rears its ugly head.

Paint your gates, starting with primer

One of the most common ways to avoid rust is through the use of paint. However, if you slap paint on it straight away the results will not only be ineffective – but it will also look terrible. In order for paint to be completely effective you need to use primer first. It is best if the primer that you are using also has rust inhibition in order to maximize its effectiveness. Apply the primer (as well as the paint) utilizing a spray can so thateffort will not be an issue. Keep in mind that one coat will not be enough. For both paint and primer, two coats are recommended.

Utilizing this method, it is possible for your iron gate’s longevity to last as long as you need it to. However, you will likely need to repeat the process after a certain amount of time has passed. You also need to make sure that the swing gate hinges are also coated by both primer and paint.
